One thing struck me when I saw the commif of this file.  Do you make
sure the group names are converted to lower case letters?  They should
be.  The user names should also only use lower case letters.  I know
several systems handling user names without caring about the case, and
we do not want to end up with groups or user names where the only
difference is the letter casing.
