[Devel] Time for a multimedia-oriented project?

Skolelinux already has som multimedia tools:
Noteedit, Xine and kmidi. But this does not
cover everything that schools do with multi-
media.

What is missing?

Audio and video editing, and grabbing of
analog and digital video.
Candidates: Kino, Cinelerra.

Advanced score writing (musical notes)
Candidates: Rosegarden4, Brahms.

Heavy-duty audio editing (many tracks and FX)
Candidate: Ardour.

The programs above do not work straight out
of the box, due to special hardware and driver
requirements. And they are still in beta.

With some small adaptations, though, they would
work on most systems, without manual tweaking.

Newer sound applications tend to require Alsa
and Jack. Jack in turn, requires shmfs. These
are not installed on vanilla Woody.
When Alsa and Jack are installed, it does not
work out of the box; the post-install configuration
could be much more complete.

A small amount of extra scripting could do a lot
to simplify installation and setup of many a
multimedia application.
