Dear sir

my name is Gjermund Skogstad, and besides from attending courses in computer
science at Finnmark College, I am also taking part in a Norwegian project
named Skolelinux. This project's main objective is to make the Linux-OS
available for Norwegian public schools, as a realistic alternative to the
more expensive Windows solutions they currently are dependent on.

If the Linux-OS is to be a realistic, and believable alternative for the
Norwegian public schools, we need to get past a certain threshold on the
level of install-, maintenance- and user friendliness. As one of many issues
identified by the projects participants, we recognise that we need to get an
implementation of Java-VM in this distribution of Linux. Further we
acknowledge that the Blackdown group's implementation of the Java-VM is the
most appropriate choice for this project, since we need both support for
Java2, AWT and Swing, as well as a certain degree of trustworthiness.

What I want to ask you, is whether we can be allowed to include the
debian-package named j2re1.3_1.3.1-1_i386.deb in our distribution.
Located at URL:
ftp://sunsite.auc.dk/pub/languages/java/java-linux/debian/dists/woody/non-free/binary-i386/

Am I addressing the correct person?
Sadly I am not sure exactly where to direct my question. If this request is
pointed to the wrong person, please accept my apologies. If this is the case,
I would be grateful if you could point me towards the person(s) I should
discuss this matter with.

If it is possible to let us include this package on our CD for Norwegian
schools, but there are some issues you wish to press, please let us know. We
will probably be both willing and able to discuss several different practical
solutions to reach an agreement.

I will be gratefull for any reply.

Yours sincerely

Gjermund Skogstad

What exactly is Skolelinux??

First and foremost: As you probably already have guessed, "Skolelinux"
translates to School-Linux.

We (The Skolelinux-team) are working on a distribution of Linux suited for
Norwegian public schools. The Skolelinux project is coordinated by the
non-profit organisation called Linux I Skolen (LIS) (see www.linuxiskolen.no
(Unfortunately I do not believe it to be available in English)).

We are determent to make this distribution of Linux simple to install and
maintain, and to base it on Norwegian language. All applications that are
included in this distribution, is meant to be available in both written
Norweigian languages (Bokmaal and Nynorsk), and if possible even Saami.

The distribution must be small enough to function on all the slow and
outdated computers still in use in many public schools.

We are basing our Linux-distribution on Debian GNU/Linux and desktop
applications from KDE and GNOME. This situation may be changed at a later
stage, in accordance to the experiences made by the users in public schools.
